This version of Weak Forecasting delivers the same problem for past discounting as regular Weak Forecasting, since a discounter will always either affirm or be indifferent towards the meager future good. But it delivers a better diagnosis in the Precipice case. If it turns out you will always prefer to have died or be indifferent to living, it may very well be rationally permissible to die (modulo all of the important moral and psychological qualifications raised above). But if you will sometimes prefer you’d lived going forward, then Weak Forecasting for Life Extension does not entail suicide is rationally permissible, since it does not apply to your case.

This reasoning will get trickier when we apply it to more complicated real‐world cases of deciding to extend your life in the face of radical change. I’ll tackle those issues separately in Chapter 10. For now, note that we can qualify Weak Forecasting to make it suicide‐proof.
